Come, Gentle Night

Standing on Ponte Pietra as the Adige river meanders past the town of Verona, Italy. As clouds float serenely across the fading pale blue sky and the sun begins it's final arc of the day, there is a sense of contentment of a day well spent. A day of exploring alleys and cobblestone streets, of discovering hidden courtyards, of immersing yourself in the history of this ancient town.In these concluding moments, atop the Ponte Pietra, the thrum of people walking and talking and passing you by slowly fades, and all that can be heard is the steady babbling of the Adige River flowing below. Then as the shadows lengthen with the dying of the day, the afternoon glow, soft and diffuse, illuminates the colourful houses in it's golden light. It is the last act of the sun on this day, a light-show from nature to say goodnight, but not goodbye. Now the sun is gone, and with it goes the warmth of it on your cheek. So with a last longing look, you turn and gently meander down these winding streets once again, searching for a taverna in which you will toast the day and coming of this gentle night. The details for this image are:
