Wylie’s Baths Sunset

June 7, 2021

With a potentially epic sunset forecast, I meandered down to one of Sydney's oldest and most beautiful ocean tidal pools, Wylie’s Baths.

Established in 1907 by Henry Alexander Wylie, the baths sit below the highwater mark to ensure it gets cleaned out by the tides twice a day and is located a few hundred metres further south of Coogee Beach, accessed via the Coastal Walkway.

I’ve been thinking about this shot for a while now, and deliberately chose to shoot this Ocean Pool at sunset instead of sunrise due to the positioning of it along the cliffs.

My first shot was from on top of the cliffs, shooting down, but I didn’t think it would showcase the sunset glow as well as I’d hoped, so I climbed down a path well-worn by spear fishermen and kids wanting to drink and smoke without being disturbed, before setting my gear up on a rock exposed by the low tide. Here I took several photos, one of which was for half a second, the other for 5 minutes.

Can you guess which is which?
