Malabar Ocean Pool Sunrise

June 8, 2021

Hidden away along the coast of Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs is an ocean pool that really does feel as though it’s ‘Locals Only’.

Malabar Ocean Pool is found close to Malabar Beach in Long Bay directly below Randwick Golf Club, and it has to be one of Sydney’s best kept secrets.

I’ve been a few times now, and every time it feels so removed from the hustle and bustle of the city, with a laid-back vibe and incredibly friendly locals.

In fact, this morning, just after the sun had risen, several of these locals arrived, including Joan with her Papillon, Andy. Joan is 92 years old and still comes down most mornings to swim.

This is just the sort of place Malabar Ocean Pool is; one where loyal locals come daily for their early morning swim, and where visitors are welcomed with a yarn.

I spent more time here than I expected, drawn into the gentle conversations amongst the locals. And as I was packing up to leave, a lovely woman bid me farewell and left me with the words: “Welcome to the clan.”

It gave me pause, ever so briefly, and with it, a smile.

I will definitely be back. If not to photograph, then at least to join the community of people who call it their own.
