Guiding Light

Sunset over Mount Canobolas in Orange.
Sunset over Mount Canobolas in Orange.

No longer fading away
Instead a burst of bright
Explodes into the sky
Shining me home
As my guiding light

There is so much about this photo that makes me think it shouldn't work (like the over-exposed sky and the lens flare streaking towards the corners).

But then I look at it again.

The soft golden light in the trees.
The rolling hills stretching out into the distance.
The burst of bright light exploding into the sky.
The texture in the clouds.

All these elements taken on their own would be terrible, but combined together here, it somehow forms a picture that just works.

At least it does to me.
