Splash of Red
I started the week with a black and white photo of someone under an umbrella striding through the pouring rain, so I thought I should finish the week with a colour version of a similar scene!
Taken on the same night, once again in the Domain, I got low to the ground for the leading lines towards the glowing streetlights ahead. I was crouched down for a while, waiting for the perfect person to come walking along this path, and got lucky when I saw her and her bright red tote bag.
I really like the composition of this image. It's dominated by the shiny pavement, reflecting the light from the post just a little further down, while the tree reaches out above to form a natural protection from the rain. Then the woman with her bag and clear umbrella click clacking-down the path. She isn't a major part of the image, but she is an essential element that helps provide balance and context, as well as her own story. And what is a photo, if not a story? Sometimes it's obvious what the story is, but sometimes it's mysterious. Who is this person and where are they going on this cold, rainy night? Are they going to meet up with friends or family, or home for a quiet night in with a cup of tea (or glass of red) and a hot water bottle? These questions, and many more, will remain unanswered for all but her, and that's okay because do we really need to know the answer to everything? Is life not better with just a hint of mystery? I guess that's for you to know and me to find out.Have a great weekend!
